Minerals are often one of those products that gets over looked. Yet they are something that affect all stock. Many rations are often found to be lacking in minerals, with this in mind, we have a few questions for you to consider: Does your current diet supply the adequate minerals and vitamins required for the modern high yielding dairy cow? Do you include additional minerals in blends fed to your animals? Does you present mineral actually meet all the animals requirements? It is more important than you might think to ensure your animals are fed the right amount of minerals and vitamins because: The increased use of blends by many farmers means that minerals and vitamins in concentrate cannot always deliver the animals requirements. Higher milk yield means that higher levels of minerals and vitamins are often required. Many home grown feeds are often found to be short of minerals and vitamins and have a detrimental effect (e.g. selenium and copper). Lack of adequate minerals and vitamins can have a dramatic effect on cow fertility. Ring the office to discuss your mineral requirements on 01948 661602   EXCEL MINERAL Our Excel Mineral, (which like our Excel range of compounds) has everything the modern dairy cow requires with high levels of: Vitamin A 500,000 Vitamin D3 150,000 Vitamin E 3,500 Also contains fully protected Copper and Zinc. We are able to offer this mineral at a competitive price, so call the office for more information or to place your order on 01948 661602. Ecosyl are one of the most respected additive companies with many years of independent feeding trials... Place your order before Christmas to receive your free Ecosyl calculator. ANOTHER SUCCESS STORY We would like to share with you another success story on farm which is relative to all of us this year. We have a customer who has bought a custom blend earlier this year booking right through from May 2007 to April 2008. This blend is looking very competitive against the current raw material market. Silage on the farm like many, doesn't seem to have a lot of poke in it. Cows weren't milking as well as hoped. Another silage sample was taken and put on emergency turn round for results (which were back within 48 hours), from the result we were able to change to the blend to match the face sample taken (previously a core sample taken was). To balance the forage the blend is now costing an extra £30 per tonne. We also added 2kg of high sugar energy content Molasses (Caneflow) to the diet which is fed to all the cows and Megalac Protected Fat was added at ½kg to the high group. The Molasses was added to ensure maximum intake and rumen function, the Megalac was added to increase the overall energy of the diet whilst enhancing cow condition. The results for this are as follows: Within 3 weeks an extra 500 litres per day was being produced (an increase of over 3 litres per cow) Butterfat at 4.1 Protein at 3.4 Total cost of extra feed for the month = £2862 Total margin from extra milk for the month = £4278 (Wisemans/Tesco contract at 27.6p/litre) = an extra margin of £1416 per month = an extra margin of £9912 for the winter This is not taking into (financial) account better cow condition, and the cows are now bulling stronger than ever - what price do you put on fertility? These results are for October, and as we stand today (1st week of November) we have produced an extra 100 litres per day over and above the figures shown (onwards and upwards). We at GP Feeds can enhance your business. We have the opportunity with increased milk prices to maximise your profits. Let us achieve this on your farms as we have many other - lets got for it! GP Feeds are here to work with you to achieve better results. SUGARBEET OFFER British sugar will not be bringing out any 2nd offer tonnage for Sugarbeet. Imported Sugarbeet has been reported to cost in excess of £180/tonne We at GP Feeds have some 1st offer British Sugarbeet left, which is very competitively priced against the market today. If you want British Sugarbeet please ring the office without delay on 01948 661602 - only limited tonnage left! Place your order today to avoid higher prices and before we sell out. YEASTS A product that is proving to be valuable on many dairy and beef farms this year is Yeast. Yeast is designed to maintain a healthy rumen, aid fibre digestion, increase milk yields, improve dry matter intakes, improve liveweight gains and food conversions. This year in particular live yeast is helping to raise overall rumen PH and increase fibre-digesting bacteria with many of the silages that don't appear to be performing as well as their analysis suggest. Less than ¼ of a litre would cover the cost of 30 - 50 grams of Yeast per day plus all the additional benefits. Certainly a product that needs considering - if you need more information please phone the office or your usual agent. PROTECT YOUR MAIZE FROM TOP TO BOTTOM... HAS NEW ZEALAND BEEN LISTENING TO GP FEEDS?... CHALLENGE US At GP Feeds we pride ourselves on our motto, 'QUALITY PAYS'. Ruminant feed, both compounds and blends (usually customised), is the focus of our business Each month you receive our newsletter. We believe it is informative, up to date and tells you much about other products we are actively involved in. We receive a lot of interest on straights products and now are getting a similar response regarding our feeds from a cross section of farmers including individual buying group members. Why we wonder? Feed is the single biggest cost consideration in milk production so, in a year when many farmers are struggling to really get cows going, are they prepared to possibly pay a bit more, to get the right advice and see output rise? With feed costs escalating, and likely to continue to do so, 'short cuts' are being taken within the industry, to the detriment of you the milk producer. GP Feeds will NOT follow this route, and with milk prices now where they need to be, producing as many litres as possible WILL pay, even if the inputs may cost a bit more. You know it makes sense. Challenge your herd and challenge GP Feeds. We don't and won't compromise our diets, by using inferior products nor will we 'chop and change' our formulations. MOLASSES As usual, when we mention products in our newsletter, there is always an increase in demand. This has certainly been the case with molasses! Whether you are looking for a spot load or forward contract, we believe we have the product to suit your needs. We also believe we are the most competitive. Molasses prices will undoubtedly rise in the not too distant future on the back of the energy market - one of our three suppliers of molasses has already done so. So give the office a call to book your requirements on 01948 661602. 'Haven't got a tank? No problem - we have a tank scheme available - call 01948 661602 and speak to Gareth for further details. WHY CHEAP ISN'T ALWAYS BEST - QUALITY IS THE KEY We understand many of you are concerned with the ever increasing prices of feed, but we still believe in our motto 'QUALITY PRODUCTS FOR QUALITY PRODUCTION'. All our feeds have been carefully formulated with only the best ingredients - we don't use fillers. Remember fillers are just that - cheaper products used by most compounders to cheapen feed and fill your animals, but they don't produce results or give your animal the necessary nutrients it requires to get the best from it! We believe in getting the whole diet of your animals right, and therefore get the best results for YOU. Here at GP Feeds we believe the best way to do this is by: Using only quality ingredients in our compounds and blends - no fillers here! Sticking to fixed formulations - we don't change our rations as the season progresses unless YOU ASK us to! Balancing the whole diet - a must for this year because of the relatively poor grass silage. So if you are looking for something different call us today on 01948 661602. GPF HIGH TBC MINERAL Yet another of our products that has seen a rise in demand - our 'GPF HIGH TBC MINERAL' is specially formulated to tackle high cell counts. Benefits / Features Contains high levels of Vitamin E and Selenium to maximize antioxidant activity and help the cow to combat bacterial infections in the udder. Contains copper from 3 different sources (including organic) to ensure that the animal has enough bio available Copper for its metabolic processes. Contain Zinc from 3 different sources (including organic) to ensure that the animal has enough bio available Zinc for its metabolic processes. See dramatic results in a short space of time. Place your order today on 01948 661602 SILAGES Silaging this year has been difficult for many due to the variable weather this summer. Here at GP Feeds we have seen many analysed samples, and the overall trend seems to lean towards lower Dry Matter, ME and Intake Potential than last year. In summary a winter ration for 35 litres based on ad lib grass silage will require 11 kgs / day of concentrates compared to 10 kgs / day in 2006 / 07. So it is more important than ever to your silages tested and then get your feed requirements built around the results. Contact us at the office on 01948 661602 for details on getting your silage analysed and what we would recommend feeding with it. MYCOTOXINS - ARE THEY AFFECTING YOUR HERD? Another thing we feel important to discuss this month is mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are naturally produced mould, but invisible to the naked eye. they can cause many problems such as: scouring inconsistent milk yields acidosis-type symptoms poor rumen function lower leg / teat swelling where do mycotoxins occur? They can often be found in silage, and with the inconsistent weather this summer many have become the ideal breeding ground for mycotoxins. They can also be found in many other feedstuffs on the farm. If you think you may have a problem, here at GP Feeds we have just the product to combat mycotoxins 'MYCOSORB' - call the office and speak to Gareth on 01948 661602 to find out more. 'Remember mycotoxins are invisible - don't lose money just because you can't see them' THANK YOU We would like to thank all of you who attended the Open Day at Mr & Mrs Richardson, Higher Green Farm, Byley on 6th September. From the various comments made to us on the day an enjoyable time was had by all. Once again we thank Mr & Mrs Richardson for their kind hospitality on the day. EVERY LITRE HELPS - USE FATS As it has already been widely reported, the UK is unlikely to reach milk quota till at least 2011, even with the increases in milk price. With this in mind, we feel you should take advantage of this situation by making every litre count. Whether by increasing litres or quality, one way to improve these is by using fats. Here at GP Feeds we have several that can help, our most popular ones being: Megalac - by boosting the overall energy of the diet it is proven to increase yield by over 2 litres per cow per day . CS Plus - contains a high level of C16 to maximise butterfats, sustain...

ECOSYL - EARLY ORDER OFFER... When it comes to quality products and quality advice GP Feeds in my opinion offer the best." "FORAGE SAVER NUTS are so palatable that my dairy cows can't wait for their daily rations and it has definitely reduced silage intakes." "I was using calf and youngstock products from another major supplier in Cheshire but was unhappy with performance. I changed to your COARSE CALF 16 and within one month saw a fantastic difference and growth. I will never feed a cheaper diet again - quality counts!" "I was annoyed how much cheaper your minerals were compared to the one I was using. For exactly the same specification I was saving over £50 per tonne." "How refreshing, in these days of doom and gloom, to have a company who seems to know exactly what we want and to supply it with the minimum of fuss in a pleasant and open manner." Thank you to all those customer who continue to pass favourable remarks about us - the ones above are just a selection. CHRISTMAS ORDERS If you haven't placed your Christmas and New Year orders yet - don't delay phone the office today to get them booked in: 01948 661602 There will be NO DELIVERIES on the following dates: Christmas Eve - Sunday 24th December 2006 Christmas Day - Monday 25th December 2006 Boxing Day - Tuesday 26th December 2006 New Years Eve - Sunday 31st December 2006 New Years Day - Monday 1st December 2007 SILAGES Many silages this year have been found to be lacking in minerals (key elements lacking are Manganese, Zinc & Cobalt - anywhere between 10 - 18% lower). The reason behind this is due to a cooler March, and although April's temperature was similar to last years the soil temperatures remained low, and delayed the grass growing season. Another thing to bear in mind is that the Potassium to Magnesium ration continues to widen and is therefore putting more stress onto cows - what can farmers do to counteract this? Make sure you get your silage tested to ensure that you are feeding your cows all their daily requirements. If you need help checking your diet please ring the office and we will arrange for someone to come and speak to you. GP Feeds have a wide range of minerals and can also bespoke a mineral to suit your on farm needs. Ring the office today for more details: 01948 661602 STRAIGHTS MARKET UPDATE With Christmas almost upon us and the commodities used for animal feed are in as big a turmoil as ever. In relation to Gluten feed and other Maize products from the USA a decision was made not to allow imports other than with zero tolerance of the genetic GM material B10. There is however a meeting of the Standing Committee Working Group on GM feed and food on the 15th December 2006, when we hope some advance can be made. Even at this late stage it is doubtful that there will be shipments before February 2007 and there is still material required by compounders and merchants to replace Gluten and Distillers in the period which could have an impact on prices. Palm Kernel has had a sudden leap in price due to large tonnage recently bought by the power stations, currently up £20 per tonne from when most of the contracted tonnage was originally bought. This along with grain prices which are over £100 per tonne delivered for both Barley and Wheat on the spot market, could mean price rises for compounds at the turn of the year. Soya meal would appear to be the only protein available in abundance and this together with a week dollar has helped to bring the price down. We could see several products such as Rapemeal, Palm Kernel, Citrus, Maize Gluten, Maize Distillers, Soya Hulls and Sugarbeet become technical markets with some price volatility during the later part of the winter. Overall there remains a lot of uncertainty about how the markets will move, and should the weather remain relatively mild perhaps the lack of feed demand will help to keep the prices in check, but be aware if we do get a spell of really hard weather to spark off demand, higher prices will surely follow! For the past couple of years Molasses has been driven into rations as a nutritious liquid with added benefits but now it is once again featuring as a cost effective source of sugars and energy. Here at GP Feeds we believe this is the only way to feed animals. Remember that old saying from John Ruskin (1819 - 1900): 'A word to the wise' "It is unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay to little you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought is incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run. And if you do that, you will have enough to, pay for something better." So why not ring GP Feeds today on 01948 661602 and we will be happy to discuss our approach to feeding your animals with you.
